Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her artistic and creative side in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant so that she could have an opportunity to study literature or theater. DuVernay enjoyed the movie West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of that art can be an effective vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would be the inspiration for her later a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become fascinated by the production aspect of the broadcast media. DuVernay began her career working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home of an individual member of the Jury. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied with journalism so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay got a job right from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective. Anders was originally born in Madison and raised DeForest. However, she is currently living with her family in Los Angeles.
